EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
